Cooking / Nutrition

The MLK contracts with Registered Dietitian Kristin Niessink who is available for one-on-one nutrition counseling free of charge to uninsured or under-insured clients.

Classes:

LivFit Cooking & Nutrition is offered at the MLK every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5 pm. RSVP required: contact Kristin at niessink6@aol.com or (401) 368-7614.

Sabores Latinos is the MLK's first cooking class taught completely in Spanish! Offered every Monday at 5 pm, this class will alternate between traditional and plant-based each week. RSVP required: Register online, or contact Mel at MSaunders@MLKCCenter.org or (401) 846-4828.

Community Meals

The MLK is pleased to offer several different monthly meals.

Lunch & Learn is a twice-monthly lunchtime lecture series for older adults. Speakers from the community offer topics of interest to seniors while a healthy lunch is served. These events are open to the public, but an RSVP is necessary to attend.

Grab & Go lunches are offered twice weekly, on Tuesday and Thursdays from 11:30 am to 1 pm. No RSVP is needed to attend. 

Grab & Go meals are offered on a rotating basis, often once per month.

Santa's Workshop: The holidays are such a special time, but for those who need help supplying toys for their families it can be stressful. Fortunately, with donations from the community, the MLK Center helps to provide needed assistance.

 

Who is eligible?

Any Newport County resident.

The registration webpage will become live in the fall prior to the holidays.

The MLK Community Center offers free fitness programming, suitable for all ages and skill-levels, on a weekly basis. Classes are taught by certified fitness instructors on a volunteer basis (we're always looking for volunteers to lead programs!)
